“A New Day” For Case for Community Day:

Campus’ day of volunteering Friday, Sept. 21

Over 500 volunteers needed for community service projects

On September 21, over 500 Case Western Reserve University staff, faculty and students will spend part of the day devoting time to community service projects during the university's fifth annual "Case for Community Day."

“It is a ‘new day’ for the Case for Community Day program,” noted Latisha James, director for the Center for Community Partnerships, which sponsors the event. “It will be held on a Friday, during the University Community Hour for the first time, allowing more people the opportunity to participate.”

Volunteers will have 57 opportunities to choose from, such as landscaping several neighborhood homes; cleaning and groundskeeping at local churches and community centers; assisting senior citizens with light household chores; arts and crafts with seniors and elementary school students; on-campus sports camps and clinics; and the Providence House blanket project.

Online registration for projects runs September 4-14.

For those with less time available, Case for Community Day is offering eight on-campus drives inside Thwing Center. Campus community members can drop of donations to support a number of causes, including Replay for Kids (restore and fix toys); Bras for Africa; Dress for Success; back-to-school supplies; and Cleveland Food Bank food drive. Also, the campus community will be invited to participate in an American Red Cross Blood Drive that day in Thwing. Participants can register online at http://www.redcrossdonor.org/

Since the inaugural Case for Community Day in 2002, nearly 1,800 people from the campus community have invested over 6,000 hours of volunteer service, benefiting hundreds of non-profit organizations.

As part of Case for Community Day, the university will also highlight other ways the university engages with the community as a good neighbor. Once again, the university will launch the annual Charity Choice campaign -- a fundraising drive that allows the campus community to donate charitable funds to agencies of United Way, Community Shares and Earth Shares—during the kick-off program. Since this program's inception, the university has donated close to $1 million through Charity Choice.

A short program will open Case for Community Day at 11:30 a.m. in Thwing Ballroom. President Barbara Snyder and others will make short remarks prior to volunteers leaving for their projects at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be provided at check-in beginning at 11 a.m.

Originally created by the university's Staff Advisory Council's Community Service Committee in 2002, Case for Community Day is sponsored by the Center for Community Partnerships and made possible by the tremendous support and collaboration of many departments: The Offices of the President and the Provost, University Relations, Staff Advisory Council, Center for Civic Engagement and Learning, University Programs and Events, Facilities Services, Office of Marketing and Communications, Bon Appétit and our Charity Choice Federation Representatives.
