Recommendation for appointment as department chair, interim chair or acting chair.

The Office of the Provost reviews recommendations for department chair appointments and sends them to the university president for final decision and appointment. Search and other requirements are carried out in accord with the description in the Faculty Handbook and with school bylaws.

Department Chair Leadership Forums

The Department Chair Leadership Forums are held three times per academic year in September, February and April from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm and are presented by the Provost and Executive Vice President and the Chair of Organizational Behavior at the Weatherhead School of Management.

All university department chairs are invited to this leadership development and community building event.  Topics of particular interest to department chairs are discussed, such as conflict resolution, department climate, diversity and inclusion, and faculty engagement.

Orientation for New Department Chairs

An orientation for new department chairs is held in August each academic year from 12:00 noon to 2:30 pm.  The objectives of this session are to:

  • Increase knowledge of Case Western Reserve University, its personnel and financial systems, and university resources
  • Clarify the role of the department chair at Case Western Reserve University and what is necessary to function effectively in the position
  • Enhance academic leadership skills and gain practical skills in the day-to-day management of the department
  • Enhance network of contacts within Case Western Reserve University for ongoing problem solving, support and information sharing.
