Revisiting Comfort: Strategies Observed in the Direct Observation Study. Abbe M, Sudano J, Demko C, Victoroff K, Williams K, Lalumandier J, and Wotman S. General Dentistry 2007, 55; 420-425 This paper reports observed techniques concerning the provision of comfort to routine dental patients. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques were utilized.

Concordance of chart and billing data with direct observation in dental practice. Demko CA, Victoroff KZ, and Wotman S. Community Dent Oral Epidemiol 36:466-74, 2008.This analysis reports on the validity of commonly used methods such as dental chart review, billing data, or practitioner self-report compared with a ‘gold standard’ of information derived from direct observation of routine dental visits.

Caring for African-American patients in private practice. Williams K, Demko C, Lalumandier J, Wotman S. JADA 2008: 139; 1218-1226. This paper compares services provided to 292 African American in 64 of the 120 practices in the Direct Observation Study to 1552 Caucasian patients in the same practices. Unlike in medical practice, there was little difference in observed services provided, while there were subtle differences in perceived dentist communications by patients.
