2009
1) LaShanda (co-PI) and David Schiraldi (PI) received funding from NSF to support a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site in Polymer Science & Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.
2) Dr. David A. Stone (PhD Chemistry, Northwestern University) joined the Korley and Wnek Research Groups as a research associate.
3) LaShanda organized the Functional Materials Symposium, including sessions in Biofunctional Materials, Membranes and Layered Systems, Emulsion Polymers - Materials and Characterization, Carbon and Allotropes, and Multi-functional Polymeric Materials, at the 41st Central Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, May 20-23, 2009 in Cleveland, OH. Casey, Nick, and Tiffani presented posters at the meeting.
4) LaShanda was a Discussion Leader and Poster Presenter at the Polymers Gordon Research Conference held on June 21-26, 2009 at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA.
5) LaShanda participated as a mentor in the 2nd Annual Future Faculty Workshop: Diverse Leaders of Tomorrow, which seeks to encourage and advise underrepresented students interested in academic careers in the area of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science as it relates to Polymer Science, Materials Chemistry and Physics, Nanoscience, and Supramolecular Science. This three-day workshop was held August 8-11, 2009 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, PA.
6) Unique Luna joined the Korley Research Group as a MS candidate.
7) LaShanda, Tiffani, and David gave oral presentations at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers on November 8-13, 2009 in Nashville, TN. LaShanda also served as a Session Chair at the meeting.
8) LaShanda was invited to serve as a workshop speaker at the University of Minnesota on January 14, 2010 on Polymer Toughening, sponsored by the Industrial Consortium (IPrime) and the University of Minnesota MRSEC.
9) LaShanda was invited to speak at the inaugural PMSE Young Investigator Symposium at the 2010 ACS National Meeting held March 21-25, 2010 in San Francisco.
2008
1) LaShanda was awarded an ACS PRF Starter G for her proposal, Hierarchically-assembled Segmented Polyurethanes: Mechanical Reinforcement in a Multi-phase Elastomeric System.
2) LaShanda (co-PI) and Gary Wnek (PI) received a research contract from the Army Natick Laboratories for their proposal, Toward Thin and Tactile, Chem/Bio Agent-Protective Gloves.
3) LaShanda was awarded a NSF BRIGE grant for her proposal, Toughening Mechanisms in Supramolecular Networks with Photocrosslinkable Moieties.
4) Joseph Casey Johnson and Nicholas Wheeler joined the Korley Research Group as PhD candidates.
5) LaShanda, LaRuth McAfee (CLiPS), Christopher Hernandez (Mech Eng), and Carlos Crespo (Chemistry) hosted Many Faces of STEM, an outreach event to expose middle students from the Cleveland Municipal School District to underrepresented role models in STEM and to hands-on science activities at CWRU. Over 50 students and teachers attended this half-day workshop. Thanks to the Korley Research Group!
