CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Undergraduate Programs in Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is that field of engineering that deals with the manufacturing of useful substances by chemical reaction and processing. It is sometimes said to be concerned with “big chemistry.’ Chemists discover new useful substances such as materials, and pharmaceuticals. Chemical Engineers take those discoveries and figure out ways to make them on an industrial basis in an economical and safe manner. To take a typical example: Chemists discovered nylon in the late 1930’s. Originally, they made milligram quantities. Chemical Engineers invent the processes to make millions of tons of it per year.

Chemical Engineering is one of the most broadly based disciplines in Engineering. Graduates of our program go on to employment in a wide range of industries ranging from Pharmaceuticals to Chip Manufacturers. For example, within those industries, our graduates practice as programmers, chemical plant designers, engineering salespersons, quality assurance experts, and, of course, managers. Our graduates also go to a variety of professional and graduate schools. Among others, we send students to law schools, medical schools, MBA programs, and accounting schools.

Our program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

In order to create the most flexible curriculum for our students, the chemical engineering department has created a set of pre-approved elective sequences, a concentration in Biochemical engineering, and programs especially designed for students interested in medical school.

In addition, the department has a BS/MS program that will enable a student to get a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in 5 years. We have active undergraduate research programs and a co-op program.
