CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

BS/MS Program in Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers a five year combined BS/MS Degree program. This program offers outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to obtain a M.S. degree in one additional year of study beyond the B.S. degree. (Normally, it takes between 1 - 1/2 to 2 years beyond the B.S. to get an M.S. degree.) Students admitted to this program may take up to nine credits of graduate courses that will count toward both B.S. and M.S. requirements.

Applicants for the BS/MS program must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and should apply after the completion of 75 credit hours, but before attaining Senior status (completion of 90 credit hours). Usually, this means that student will submit applications in the sixth semester of the B.S. program. Chemical Engineering students should apply by February 15th. If your academic program is different from the standard program described in the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Handbook due to Co-op or transfer credit, and it not appropriate for you to apply in the Spring semester, please see Dr. Edwards.

Plan A Program
Most students interested in the BS/MS program will attain a Master's degree through the Plan A - Thesis track. When considering the BS/MS program, students should also consider their research for a Master's Thesis. Students should talk to potential reserach advisors about appropriate research projects available in their labs during the semester prior to applying for the program. Financial support may be available during the last summer and academic year of the BS/MS program, and students should discuss the availability of funding with their intended research advisor. Students are also encouraged to apply for outside funding opportunities. Use the following links to view a sample of funding opportunities for students with undergraduate (view UG funding) or graduate (view Grad funding) standing.

Plan B Program
The Department of Chemical Engineering also offers a 5 1/2 year BS/MS program to students who participate in the Undergraduate Co-op program. Students following the 5 1/2 year program will earn an M.S. degree through the Plan B - Project plan. Students in this program will complete 6 credits of a graduate project (ECHE 660) during the second co-op period and will follow the Advanced Study elective sequence. Students interested in this program should discuss potential projects with their co-op employer when applying for this program. The faculty advisor for all students following the co-op BS/MS program is Dr. Edwards.

Students with questions about the BS/MS program should see Dr. Robert Edwards (rve2@cwru.edu) in the Department of Chemical Engineering and James McGuffin-Cawley, CSE Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs (jxc41@cwru.edu). Students should also discuss an appropriate program of study with their advisor. Information about applying for the BS/MS program is available here: Apply for BS/MS.
