Local community invited to "Hoop it Up" to score points for better health

Third annual Hoop it Up for Health Fair takes place June 3 at Case Western Reserve University
Where can the Greater Cleveland community come to:
- Receive life-saving health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and diabetes;
- Watch an exciting game of hoops;
- Mingle with local celebrities;
- Enter to win free tickets to the hottest venues in town; and
- Do all of the above for free?
The answer is the 3rd Annual Hoop it Up for Health Fair & Basketball Tournament on June 3 at Case Western Reserve University's Veale
Convocation Center, 2128 Adelbert Road. The free event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The health fair begins at 9 a.m. as many local health agencies will be on site to share information about important health topics ranging from heart disease, blood pressure, diabetes, balanced diet, nutrition and exercise. Besides obtaining vital information at the fair, free health screenings will be conducted courtesy of physicians and nurses from event sponsors the Cleveland Clinic and Firm Foundations Community II. Also, there will be exercise demonstrations, healthy eating tips, and the chance to talk privately with physicians about health issues.
"We are truly pleased to serve as a partner to support the efforts of the Hoop It Up For Health Fair & Basketball Tournament," says Pamela Holmes Marshall, Cleveland Clinic's vice president of government and community relations. "One of our goals is to help provide access to health care information and services to the underserved communities, and this event is a great vehicle for us to do so."
The "who's who" basketball tournament begins at 10:30 a.m., as more than 30 local celebrities will join 130 other men to compete in a single game elimination tournament. Cuyahoga County Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones; Cleveland City Council President Martin Sweeney; and Ronnie Duncan, Cleveland Cavaliers in-game announcer and Radio One on-air personality, are just a few of the local celebrities who will hit the court.
In addition to the health screenings, kids can participate in a Cavs skills clinic to learn and practice how to play hoops like an NBA All Star. And everyone will have the chance to win prizes such as tickets to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum or a Cleveland Indians baseball game, as well as Cavs memorabilia.
The Hoop it Up for Health Fair is sponsored by the Cleveland
Clinic, KeyBank and Medical
Mutual, in cooperation with Firm
Foundations Community II and Case. For more information, please contact Case's Center for Community Partnerships at (216) 368-3909.
