History of the Department

The Office of Community Service was created in the Spring of 1993. Its purpose was to "provide an effective and visible point of coordination for CASE's efforts to help strengthen Cleveland and its significant institutions, and to reinforce CASE's role as a major contributor to Greater Cleveland's future." The office would accomplish its purpose by:

  • Serving as a "clearing-house" for information about University programs, activities and people of interest to the community;
  • Identifying community needs and priorities that could benefit by the involvement of members of the CASE campus community;
  • Promoting programs or activities currently existing at the University rather than creating new ones.

The Office of Community Service became the Office of Community Relations in 2000 to better define its role as that of building relationships between the University and the community rather than providing direct service through volunteers.

In September 2003, President Hundert announced the creation of the Center for Community Partnerships (CCP). The CCP will develop mutually beneficial community partnerships that support the University's vision of becoming the "most powerful learning environment on earth." Specifically, the activities of the Center will focus on three program areas within the vision: Institutional Culture and Values, Campus Environment and Resources.
