BS/MS, BS/MA, and IGS Graduates

Important Information and Options


COMPLETION OF MASTER'S DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Only those who have graduated in August 2008, January 2009, or will be graduating in May 2009 may participate in the School of Graduate Studies ceremonies.  August 2009 Master's graduates are invited to participate in the May 2010 School of Graduate Studies Commencement activities.

COMMENCEMENT DAY EVENTS

For the School of Graduate Studies there are three separate events, University-wide Convocation, the School of Graduate Studies Reception, and the School of Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony.  You and your guests are welcome to attend any or all of them.  See below for details. 

Convocation for all University graduates will be held in Veale Center at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony includes the presentation of honorary degrees, a commencement address, and the conferring of degrees by the President of the University. No diplomas are given out at this ceremony. (Diplomas are awarded at the Undergraduate and Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremonies.) Tickets are required for guests to attend this ceremony.

If you plan to march in the University-wide Convocation and/or attend a diploma ceremony(s), you must register online by APRIL 1, 2009.

ATTENDANCE/REGISTRATION OPTIONS FOR BS/MS, BS/MA, AND IGS GRADUATES:

 

OPTION 1: Attend Convocation (9:30a.m.), the Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony (11:00a.m), and the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony (1:45p.m.)

OPTION 2: Attend Convocation (9:30a.m.), and the Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony Only (11:00a.m.)

OPTION 3: Attend Convocation (9:30a.m.), and the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony Only (1:45p.m.)

OPTION 4: Attend the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony Only (1:45p.m.)

OPTION 5: Do Not Attend Any Ceremonies

 

OPTION 1: Attend Convocation, the Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony, and the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony

•  If you plan to attend the Undergrad Diploma Ceremony, you must attend Convocation with the Undergraduates.

•  You should register online as a dual-degree student for Convocation, the Undergrad Diploma Ceremony, and Graduate Diploma Ceremony.

•  See the Graduate Studies section of the commencement website for Graduate Diploma Ceremony check-in times and details.  There is no rehearsal for the graduate ceremony. 

•  If you attend all 3 ceremonies, you probably will not have time to get lunch.  Please email Graduate Studies at gsgrad@case.edu if you would like a lunch, then a box lunch will be available when you check-in for the Grad Diploma Ceremony.

•  When the degrees are conferred at Convocation, you should stand when both of your degree groups are called. 

•  You will receive 2 Convocation tickets (and extra tickets, if you request and are awarded extra tickets) through Undergraduate Studies.  You will NOT receive tickets from Graduate Studies.

•  You should purchase and wear Master's regalia for all ceremonies.  After being awarded an undergraduate degree, tassels are worn on the left side of the mortar board for all Graduate students.  See below for details.

OPTION 2: Attend Convocation and the Undergraduate Diploma Ceremony Only

•  Register online as a dual-degree student for Convocation and the Undergrad Ceremony and mark that you will NOT attend the Graduate Diploma Ceremony.

•  All registration, tickets, and details will be handled through Undergraduate Studies.

•  When the degrees are conferred at Convocation, you should stand when both of your degree groups are called. 

•  You will not receive your Master's diploma on stage.  You may pick it up during the week following Commencement at the School of Graduate Studies, Nord Hall, 6th floor.  ID is required.

•  Even though you are not attending the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony, you should still purchase and wear Master's regalia for all ceremonies.  After being awarded an undergraduate degree, tassels are worn on the left side of the mortar board for all Graduate students.  See below for details.

OPTION 3: Attend Convocation and the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony Only

•  Register online, claiming only your Master's degree, for Convocation and the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony.

•  You will receive only your Master's diploma on stage during the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony.

•  Through Undergraduate Studies: Please complete and return the following form to request your Bachelor's degree in absentia: Request to receive Bachelor's degree in absentia. April 24 is the deadline for May graduates who are not participating in commencement to submit a request to receive the degree in absentia.

•  When the degrees are conferred at Convocation, you should stand when both of your degree groups are called.

•  You will receive 2 Convocation tickets through Graduate Studies.  You may request extra tickets by Registering Online under the Extra Tickets section. Extra ticket requests will only be honored for those attending Convocation with the School of Graduate Studies (you may NOT obtain extra tickets from both Undergraduate and Graduate Studies).

•  See the Graduate Studies section of the commencement website for Graduate Diploma Ceremony check-in times and details.  There is no rehearsal for the graduate ceremony. 

•  You should purchase and wear Master's regalia for all ceremonies.  After being awarded an undergraduate degree, tassels are worn on the left side of the mortar board for all Graduate students.  See below for details.

•  Graduate Studies students may also Register Online for the School of Graduate Studies Reception and/or to request Extra Convocation Tickets.

OPTION 4: Attend the Graduate Diploma Ceremony Only

•  Register online as a dual-degree student.  Mark that you will NOT attend Convocation and that you will attend the School of Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony.

•  You will receive only your Master's diploma on stage during the Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony.

•  Through Undergraduate Studies: Please complete and return the following form to request your Bachelor's degree in absentia: Request to receive Bachelor's degree in absentia. April 24 is the deadline for May graduates who are not participating in commencement to submit a request to receive the degree in absentia.

•  You will not receive any Convocation tickets.

•  Through Undergraduate Studies: Please complete and return the following form to request your Bachelor's degree in absentia: Request to receive Bachelor's degree in absentia. April 24 is the deadline for May graduates who are not participating in commencement to submit a request to receive the degree in absentia.

•  You may pick up your Master's diploma during the week following Commencement at the School of Graduate Studies, Nord Hall, 6th floor.  ID is required.  

 

GENERAL INFORMATION

ACADEMIC REGALIA – All Bachelor's/Master's dual-degree recipients should purchase and wear Master's regalia.

You must register online for commencement before purchasing regalia.  Master's graduates must purchase academic regalia at the Grad Fair or from the University Bookstore: cap, gown, and hood. No rental option is available. Master's students keep all academic regalia.  Click here for regalia pricing information.  All inquiries related to academic regalia are handled through the University Bookstore which is located in the Thwing Center on Euclid Avenue. The bookstore's telephone number is (216) 368-2650. After being awarded an undergraduate degree, tassels are worn on the left side of the mortar board for all Graduate students.
