Health Center Library

About us - including hours

The Health Center Library (HCL) occupies the first two floors of the Robbins Building of the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Originally opened in 1971, HCL underwent a major renovation project from 2002-2003. With a completely updated look and feel, HCL serves the faculty, staff and students of the Schools of Dental Medicine, Medicine and Nursing as well as the departments of Biology and Nutrition. There are study rooms, some with white boards, spacious carrels near windows and electricity as well as casual seating areas.

HCL supports a technology enhanced classroom with seating for 15.

There are 17 computer workstations for CWRU only. The library also has wireless access to the internet.

The current charge for black printers and black and color copiers is $0.15 per page. The machines are equipped with card readers and coin-ops. The library provides no change. Please call the Circulation Department at 216.368.4540 for more information.

HCL can scan library materials, both graphic and print for OCR, within the limits of the U.S. Copyright Law, for output to a digital file. The reference staff will assist you with this service. It is done by appointment for CWRU/CMLA affiliates. Please call the Reference Department at 216.368.3218 to make arrangements or send an email to hclref@case.edu. You may also scan materials at the Freedman Center at Kelvin Smith Library.

The collection is composed of books, journals, audiovisuals, microforms and electronic resources in the basic sciences, e.g., anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, etc., and also in dentistry, medicine, nursing and research. The HCL journals are from 1970 forward, with older journals at the Allen. In addition, HCL keeps theses and dissertations from graduates of the health science schools of CWRU. Journals do not circulate and loan periods for books vary. Late, lost and damaged materials are subject to fines and/or processing fees. Valid ID is required to borrow materials, including the use of the Reserve Collection in the library. Materials are shelved in several locations at the Health Center.

Food is not permitted in the library and beverages are not permitted at the computer workstations.

Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Please be considerate of others when using cell phones in the library.
