CLEVELAND HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY

Interlibrary Loan

The Interlibrary Loan department is located in the Allen Memorial Medical Library, on the Mezzanine Level. The department is staffed Monday through Friday from 8:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. The phone number is 216.368.6420. Email is chsl-ill@case.edu, (chsl-ill@case.edu).

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Books or journal articles not owned by Case Western Reserve University are obtained from libraries at other institutions or from commercial vendors.

Before initiating any interlibrary loan transaction please check by Title in EuclidPLUS for books and journals to see whether the item is owned by CWRU. You may also check the CWRU Electronic Journals List to determine if a journal is available electronically.

Who may use Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan services are available to CWRU faculty, staff and students in the health sciences schools, and to the personal and institutional members of the Cleveland Medical Library Association. Users must have accounts in good standing. Alumni must use the interlibrary loan services of their institutions, companies or public libraries.

What costs are involved in Interlibrary Loan?

The basic fee for Interlibrary Loan is $8.00 per request. There is an additional fee for Rush service. Separate fees apply to borrowing for CMLA institutional members. Students of CWRU are not charged for Interlibrary Loan services unless a Rush item is requested.

What may be borrowed on Interlibrary Loan?

Generally, copies of journal articles are provided on Interlibrary Loan. Books and other monographic items may be borrowed. However, items on reference, journal volumes or issues, psychological tests, and rare materials do not circulate among libraries. Some dissertations and theses must be purchased directly as many institutions do not circulate them. Newspaper articles are hard to obtain in a timely manner, and items published before 1900 may be difficult or impossible to obtain.

The Interlibrary Loan department cannot purchase materials from sources that sell to individuals, such as the Government Printing Office, Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) or Digital Dissertations, but can provide purchasing information.

How many requests may be made at one time?

The Cleveland Health Sciences Library (CHSL) does not place a limit on the number of interlibrary loan requests submitted for books or articles. The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) staff reserve the right to prioritize requests if an individual submits so many that other user requests cannot be processed rapidly. In case of an overload of requests, the user will contacted by the ILL staff.

What is OhioLINK borrowing? What is ILLiad borrowing? What is Loansome Doc borrowing?

OhioLINK borrowing, sometimes called PCIRC, makes it possible to obtain some materials that are not available at Case. Through the OhioLINK Library Catalog, books and some audiovisual materials that are not available locally can be requested from other member libraries of OhioLINK. The user requests the item directly without the assistance of the ILL staff. Online help is available through OhioLINK. The status of the request is available through View your library record in EuclidPLUS.

CHSL ILLiad is available for books not found at Case in EuclidPLUS nor in the OhioLINK Library Catalog. It is also used for requesting journal articles found in any database. More information is available form the CHSL ILLiad Frequently Asked Questions.

Loansome Doc is available for requesting journal articles from PubMed only. PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources. The Library Identifier (LIBID) for the Cleveland Health Sciences Library in Loansome Doc is OHUCLE.

By choosing the same user id for both Loansome Doc and for CHSL ILLiad, you may track the progress of your Loansome Doc requests through your CHSL ILLiad record.

What if I forget my password in Loansome Doc or in CHSL ILLiad?

If you forget your Loansome Doc or your CHSL ILLiad password, please contact the Interlibrary Loan department at 216.368.6420 or by emailing to chsl-ill@case.edu, (chsl-ill@case.edu). If you forget your PIN in EuclidPLUS, please contact the Circulation department at the Allen at 216.368.3641, or at the Health Center at 216.368.4540.

Borrowers' Obligations

Borrowers must pick up and return books promptly. Unclaimed photocopies will be discarded. Unclaimed books will be returned to the lending library.

The Interlibrary Loan staff may refuse privileges to users who repeatedly fail to pick up ordered items or who fail to return books by the due dates.

Keeping ILL books more than two weeks past their due dates will result in overdue fines and suspension of ILL privileges.

CHSL must honor any restrictions placed on materials by the lending library.
