CARNEGIE MELLON 120, CASE 85...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 12, 2008)- Fresh from a trip back from Florida, the sun-burnt and tanned Case Western Reserve University women’s swimming and diving team was defeated by 13th ranked Carnegie Mellon University 120-85 in a University Athletic Associatoin [UAA] conference duel meet at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland, OH.
The Spartans trailed 39-16 before freshman Marine Gu (Longwood, FL) went off in the 50-yard freestyle. The Florida native was victorious with a stunning time of 25.60 and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly event at 1:01.87.
Freshman Kelsey Zeller (Cincinnati, OH) won the 500-yard freestyle event with a finishing time of 5:22.67.
Junior Janine Machala (North Olmstead, OH-pictured) was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:10.20. Machala inched Sara Andrews by .01, marking a spectacular bang-bang photo finish moment.
Ironically, through event 16, both Spartan teams’ scores were identical with Carnegie Mellon leading 93-57.
The Spartans travel to Ohio Northern University next Friday evening for a duel meet beginning at 6:00 p.m.
