VEALE CLASSIC ...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 9th, 2007)- The Case Western Reserve University women’s swimming and diving team defeated Oberlin College (1-2) 127-100 in their first dual meet of the 2007 Veale Classic at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
Case was tied with Oberlin 53-53 at the first diving break, as these two teams battled each other heavily. Ten events later, Case Western Reserve led Oberlin 96-95 with two events to go. The Spartans would go on to win the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay, thus clinching the victory against the Yeoman.
Freshman Ellen Crummy (Butler, PA) placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:03.25. Freshman Kelsey Zeller (Cincinnati, OH) won the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:21.68 and Junior Janine Machala (North Olmstead, OH) won the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:10.47.
If these victories don’t send a statement about the talent and character on this team, I don’t know what does,” yelled Head Coach Conlon to his men's and women's team after the first day of competition.
The Spartans will race in the Veale Classic championship match against the College of Wooster (3-1) tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
