CLEVELAND, OH (February 2, 2008) - The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team warmed-up for the 2008 University Athletic Association Championship [Feb. 9 at New York University] at the Pete Wilson Wheaton College Wrestling Invitational this weekend [Fri.-Sat.].
The Spartans finished 12th out of 27 teams with 50 points. Senior David Manoogian (Green, OH-pictured) and junior Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH) were their top performers.
Manoogian, the number two seed at 141 pounds, won four straight matches to earn a chance to win his weight class, including a 7-4 decision over Nick Sanchez of Heidelberg in the semifinal match. He finished second, losing to Indianapolis’ Matt Irwin by a 4-2 decision in the championship. Manoogian moves to 16-2 on the season.
After a first round bye, Gardella, the number four seed at 149 pounds, lost a 6-4 decision to Chad Woods of Indianapolis. Gardella proceeded to rattle of five straight victories, including a 12-6 decision over the number four seed, Graig Gin of Messiah, that put him in the third place match. He fell to Woods again, this time by a 3-1 decision, placing fourth.
