CLEVELAND, OH (January 19, 2008) - Junior Drew Gardella (149; Sagamore Hills, OH – pictured) notched his 75th career victory this afternoon and moved to 8-1 on the season, as the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team defeated Mount Union College, 24-18, at Horsburgh Gym.
Gardella took an early 2-0 lead in the first period over Mount Union's Sean Dreger before finishing him off in the second period with a 6-0 decision, putting the Spartans ahead, 10-6. With the win, Gardella's career record moves to 75-18, good for second all-time in his weight class.
Senior Dave Manoogian (141; Green, OH) pushed his record to 12-1 this season, as he grappled his way to a 11-3 decision over Mount Union's Shawn O'Neill in the second match of the afternoon. Manoogian has been victorious in his last five matches.
Junior Dave Bernolt (165; Versailles, OH) and Mount Union 's Mike Manypenny were tied at 2-2 for eight periods, until Manypenny's illegal full-nelson gave Bernholt a 3-2 lead going into the ninth period. Bernholt would hold on for the victory, extending the Case Western Reserve's lead to 13-9.
Freshman Ray Lonardo (174; Boardman, OH) would extend the Spartan lead to 19-9 after pinning Mount Union 's Tim Campbell at 6:35 in the match. In Lonardo's seven victories this season, five have come by way of pin-fall.
Mount Union would pull within one point in the final match, but senior Bob Gavlak (285; Brunswick, OH) would keep his undefeated season alive, as scored a 16-0 decision over Jeff Goldsmith in the final match of the afternoon.
The Spartans have a week off before they head to Wheaton , Ill. to compete in the Wheaton College Tournament on Feb. 1-2.
