CLEVELAND, OH (November 3, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH-pictured) claimed a 149-pound title in the Spartans’ first wrestling match of the 2007-2008 season today at the Messiah College Invitational in Grantham, Pa.
Case Western Reserve finished fourth overall (out of seven) with 42.5 points. Host Messiah won the tournament with 122 points, followed by Johns Hopkins University with 96.
Gardella, seeded number one, began with a first round bye. He went on to pin McDaniel College’s Tom Boehm (2:22) in his first match, then recorded a 13-2 major decision over King College’s Val Poleto in the third round, and topped Johns Hopkins’ Matt Cole 10-5 in the championship match.
Spartan junior David Bernholt (Verssailles, OH) finished second in the 165-pound weight class. The third seed pinned Ursinus College’s Oliver Barry in 10 seconds in round one. He then defeated McDaniel’s Zach Hetrick 6-2, but fell 2-1 to Messiah’s Trent Zempel in the championship match.
BJ Greenman (Post Allegheny, PA) had a nice showing at 174-pounds, finishing 4-1 and in third place.
