2007 SPARTAN MAT CLASSIC......
CLEVELAND, OH (January 20, 2007) - The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team traveled to Manchester, Indiana to compete in the Spartan Mat Classic. Case finished fourth in the team race and had seven individuals place. Four Spartans made it to the finals, sophomore 149 pound wrestler Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills , OH), senior 157 pound wrestler Russ Tischer (Parma, OH), senior 165 pound wrestler Mike Sanchez (Dayton, OH), and senior 197 pound wrestler Thomas Sanders (Auburn, AL).
Tischer(-pictured) was the only wrestler to place first, pinning Mike Rando of Heidelberg College in two minutes and thirteen seconds, but all the Spartans wrestled well in their finals matches. Gardella lost an exciting 5-3 decision to two-time All-American Jason Roush of Mount St. Josephs. Mike Sanchez was neck and neck with his opponent Jason Brew and just missed putting him to his back in the final minute. Finally, Thomas Sanders dropped a narrow decision to Keith Garrard, a wrestler Sanders had defeated twice this season.
The three other wrestlers placing for Case were junior Nate Klingensmith (Uniontown, PA) placing fourth at 174, sophomore David Bernholt (Versailles, OH) taking fifth at 184, and junior heavyweight Dawud Wilson (Cleveland, OH) taking sixth. Also winning two matches a piece for the Spartans were junior 133 JoJo Howell (Atlanta, GA) and freshmen 141 Jake Kornblatt (Madison, WI). Both of Kornblatt's victories were by pin.
The Spartans will be back in action January 26 and 27 at the Wheaton Invitational.
