NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 18, 2006) - Case Western Reserve freshman Drew Gardella - pictured (Sagamore Hills, OH) finished in second place in the 133-pound weight class to lead the Spartans at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regional at the Veale Center. Olivet College claimed the team title with 128 points and two individual champion wrestlers. Case finished in sixth place out of the 12 teams with 56.5 points.
Gardella won his first two matches by scores of 16-8 and 7-0 respectively, before losing to John Sheets of Manchester College in the 133-pound championship match. Case finished with three wrestlers who took home the fourth spot in their individual weight classes. Sophomore BJ Greenman (Port Allegheny, PA) took the fourth spot at 141 pounds with a 2-2 record on the day. He lost in the third place match 5-3 to Josh Sasfy from Mt. St. Joseph.
Case junior Thomas Sanders (Auburn, AL) finished 2-2 at 197 pounds to take fourth place in his bracket. Sanders fell to Nick Randolph from Mt. St. Joseph 3-0 in the third place match at 197 pounds. In the 285-pound weight class, sophomore Bob Gavlak (Brunswick, OH) also finished in fourth place as he lost a narrow 2-1 decision to Keith Sterly from Olivet College in the third place match. Gavlak finished the day with a 3-2 mark including two pins and a major decision. Spartan junior Mike Sanchez (Dayton, OH) finished out the scoring for Case as he came in sixth in the 165-pound weight class.
Olivet College's Todd Hibbs was named the Midwest Regional coach of the year while Jason Roush from the Mt. St. Joseph earned the Midwest Regional wrestler of the year honors.
