WHEATON, IL (February 4, 2006) - The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team finished tied for 15th place at the 2006 Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational at Wheaton College. The tournament, one of the tops in the nation, featured 30 teams with Truman State claiming the team title with 134.5 points. The Spartans finished the tournament with 31 points led by a fourth place finish from freshman Drew Gardella - pictured (Sagamore Hills, OH).
Gardella took fourth in the 133 pound weight class as he ended up with a 5-2 record in the tournament. Both of Gardella's losses were to Dan Keller from Truman State. Junior Mike Sanchez (Dayton, OH) was the only other place finisher for Case. Sanchez took seventh place at 165 pounds with a 4-2 tournament record.
At 197 pounds, Case's Thomas Sanders (Auburn, AL), the #3 seed in the weight class, was upset by a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinal match and suffered a pin in the consolation bracket. In the 285 pound bracket, sophomore Bob Gavlak (Brunswick, OH) also lost in the quarterfinals. A #7 seed, Gavlak then fell in the consolation bracket by a 2-1 decision.
