GRANTHAM, PA (November 5, 2005) - The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team started the 2005-06 season with a very respectable second place team finish at the Messiah College Invitational. Individually, Case had four wrestlers in championship matches with two first place champions and two second place finishers. The Spartans claimed second overall with 79 points while McDaniel College won the Invitational with 83 team points.
Winning their weight class for the Spartans were freshman Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH) and junior Russ Tischer (Parma, OH). Gardella went 3-0 in the 133 pound weight class, claiming first place with a 16-0 technical fall in 5:46. Meanwhile, Tischer took the 157 pound weight class with a 3-0 mark and a 13-5 major victory in the first place match.
Finishing second place in their weight classes for Case were Mike Sanchez (Dayton, OH) at 165 pounds and Thomas Sanders (Auburn, AL) at 197 pounds. Sanchez, a junior for the Spartans, lost in a close 3-1 decision to Tony Howard from McDaniel College. In the 197 pound first place match, Sanders lost 6-0 to #1 seed Jason Reilly from Kings College.
Also wrestling well for Case today were freshmen Kyle Vasiloff (Avon, OH) and Norman Birenbaum (Newton, MA). In their first collegiate action, both wrestlers finished in third place, Vasiloff in the 149 pound weight class and Birenbaum in the 285 pound class. Fourth place finishers for Case were Jonathan Howell (Atlanta, GA) at 133 and Nate Klingensmith (Uniontown, PA) at 174 pounds.
The Spartans will take part in the Baldwin Wallace Quad next week with
host Baldwin Wallace, Waynesburg, and Mt. St. Joseph.
