UAA CHAMPIONSHIPS ...
NEW YORK, NY - (January 29, 2005) - Today at the University Athletic Association Championships held in New York, NY, Case Western Reserve University freshman Geoff Protz (Chesterland, OH) was named UAA Rookie of the Year as the Spartan wrestlers finished the day 0-2 as a team. The Spartans lost to the University of Chicago 30-14 and to NYU 31-16. Chicago claimed the UAA team title with Ai Nguyen of Chicago and Vinnie Russo of NYU sharing the Most Outstanding Wrestler award.
Earning 2005 All-Association honors for the Spartans were Protz at 141 pounds, sophomore Russ Tischer (Parma, OH) at 157 pounds, sophomore Mike Sanchez (Dayton, OH) at 165 pounds, and sophomore Thomas Sanders (Auburn, AL) at 197 pounds. Tischer's two victories were by a technical fall (15-0) and by a pin in 2:26. Protz recorded 8-3 and 9-7 decisions to finish at 2-0 on the day. Also finishing 2-0 were Sanchez with 5-4 and 10-3 decisions and Sanders with 4-0 and 8-0 decisions.
Case will return to competition next weekend at the famed Wheaton Invitational which takes place Friday, February 4 through Saturday, February 5 at Wheaton College.
