WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2007-08


CLEVELAND, OH (March 1, 2008) -
Senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH – pictured) scored her 1,000th career-point with 4.8 seconds remaining in the game and finished with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, as the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team claimed a 71-66 victory over the visiting Eagles from Emory University in both team’s season finale. Senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) finished with 22 points, including five three-pointers, in her final game for the Spartans, while Horton ends the season with 12 double-doubles (33 career).

With the win, the Spartans finish the season 13-12 (6-8 UAA), while the Eagles finish 14-11 (7-7 UAA).

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm early on, as the Spartans made only two of their first 12 shots for 16.7 percent, while the Eagles shot just 26.7 percent on 4-of-15 shooting.

Down midway through the first half, a pair of Tondo free-throws put the Spartans within two, as the Eagles had a 12-10 advantage. Case Western Reserve would take a one point lead with 8:38 remaining after Herendeen drilled her first three-pointer of the game.

At intermission, the Spartans had a 27-26 advantage. Emory’s Lora Turner had a game-high 10 points at the half, while Horton and Herendeen each had eight for the Spartans.

Freshman guard Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA) would extend Case’s lead to four with 13:14 remaining after hitting a pair of free-throws. Henry, the reigning UAA Athlete of the Week for women’s basketball, finished with five points and four assists.

The Eagles would mount a comeback, as Kerry Madison’s pair of three throws pulled Emory within a point with 9:40 left in the game. Turner would give Emory a 50-49 lead with 8:52 left after hitting two from the charity stripe. Turner finished with a team-high 18 points of 7-of-12 shooting.

The Spartans would respond, as Colleen Martin’s (Rocky River, OH) lay-up with 7:12 remaining gave her team a 53-52 lead.

With the Spartans up 68-66 with 19.1 seconds remaining, sophomore Kristyn Atkins (Naperville, IL) split a pair of free-throws to put Case up three. Horton would ice the game in the final seconds with career points 1,000 and 1,001 to give the Spartans the win and put the team over the .500 mark on the season.

The Spartans shot 40 percent from the field in the game, while the Eagles shot 40.4 percent.
