WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2007-08


CLEVELAND, OH (February 24, 2008) -
Case Western Reserve University senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH-pictured) recorded her 11th double-double of the season and 32nd of her career as the Spartans topped Carnegie Mellon University 63-49 today in a University Athletic Association contest in Pittsburgh, Pa. Horton finished with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Spartans (12-12, 5-8) will end the regular season at home on Saturday when they host Emory University at 2:00 p.m.

Freshman guard Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA) led Case Western Reserve in the first half with 13 points on four-of-four shooting from the field. Henry put the Spartans up by 10, 18-8, with a three-point play at 13:53 and increased their lead to 13, 23-10, with a three-pointer at 11:01. The Tartans (7-17, 0-13) cut the lead to six, 29-23, with a three-point play by Leah Feola with 3:59 left in the half. Case Western Reserve led 39-30 at the break, shooting 44 percent from the field and outrebounding Carnegie Mellon 19-12.

After the Tartans cut it to six, 45-39 at 13:39, sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Spartans at 13:18 and 11:12 to put them up by 12, 51-39. Case Western Reserve, who outrebounded Carnegie Mellon 43-32 in the game, held at least a nine-point lead from in the last half of the second half as the Spartans handed the Tartans their 13th straight loss. Tondo finished with a team-high 18 points, 10 of which came in the last 20 minutes. Carnegie Mellon shot just 27 percent from the field in the second half and Case Western Reserve 30 percent.

The Tartans were led by Stacie Aleski who had a game-high 20 points. Feola finished with a double-double [11 points, 10 rebounds].
