CHICAGO 59, CASE 54...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 17, 2008) - Senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH– pictured) notched her 10th double-double of the season (31st career), as the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team fell 59-54 to the University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association contest at Adelbert Gymnasium. Horton finished with a team-high 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Spartans will make their final road trip of the season next weekend, as they head to Rochester on Feb. 22 to face the Yellowjackets before heading to Pittsburgh on Feb. 24 to face the Tartans from Carnegie Mellon University.
The Spartans came out of the gates firing, as senior guard Mary Herendeen’s (Austinburg, OH) three-pointer with 13:04 remaining gave the Spartans a 12-3 advantage. Herendeen scored nine points in the first 20 minutes, including three shots from long-distance.
The Spartans started the game on a 20-5 run, leading 26-22 at intermission. The Case defense held Chicago to only 20 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, while the Spartans shot 32.3 percent from the field.
The Maroons would answer in the second half, as Dana Kaplan’s baseline lay-up with 17:50 remaining would give her a 27-26 lead – Chicago’s first since leading 17 seconds into the game. The Maroons would go up 12 with 12:54 remaining after an Anna Woods lay-up.
Freshman guard Caitlin Henry’s (Fairfax, VA) three-pointer with 3:18 remaining would pull the Spartans within five after being down by as many as 12 points. Horton’s lay-up with 1:37 left would pull the team within one.
However, Chicago would seal the victory in the final minute, as Molly Hackney’s pair of free throws with five seconds remaining would be enough to give her team the victory.
After shooting just 28.6 percent in the first 20 minutes, the Maroons shot 46.7 percent in the second half, and 36.9 percent in the game.
Henry finished with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc.
