#18 WASHINGTON 74, CASE 65...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 15, 2008) - Senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH – pictured) notched her ninth double-double of the season (30th career), as the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team fell 74-65 to No. 18 Washington University (Mo.) in a University Athletic Association contest. Horton finished with a team-high 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in the loss.
The Spartans (11-10, 4-6 UAA) will be in action again when they host the University of Chicago on Sunday. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Adelbert Gymnasium in the second game of Throwback Weekend.
The Spartans took a one point lead with 11:18 remaining in the first half, as sophomore forward Kristyn Adkins’ (Naperville, IL) coast-to-coast lay-up game the Spartans a 16-15 advantage. The Bears (16-5, 8-2 UAA) would answer, going on a 6-2 run to take a 21-18 lead.
Horton would bring the Spartans back, as her three-pointer with 4:48 remaining tied the game at 27-apiece. Horton had seven points and 11 rebounds at the half, as the Bears led, 33-27.
Three-pointers were few and far between in the first 20 minutes, as Case Western Reserve shot 1-of-8 from beyond the arc, while the Bears made only one in four attempts.
Freshman guard Caitlyn Henry (Fairfax, VA) would bring the Spartans back early on, as her five points in the first two minutes of the half tied the game at 35-apiece.
But Washington would answer, as Alex Hoover’s three-pointer with 11:52 remaining gave the Bears a 54-44 advantage.
The Bears would seal the win in the final minute, as Jill Brandt’s free throw in the final seconds gave Washington its 17 th win of the season and their eighth win in the conference.
Brandt had a game-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-4 shots beyond the arc.
Martin and Henry both finished with 13 points, as the Spartans shot 32.3 percent from the field in the game.
