CLEVELAND, OH (February 8, 2008) -
Sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo’s (McDonald, OH-pictured) 19 points, nine assists and seven rebounds helped Case Western Reserve University top New York University 73-63 tonight in a University Athletic Association game in New York City.

Prior to this season, Case Western Reserve (11-8, 4-4) had only beaten NYU (13-6, 2-6) once in 21 seasons. Just five days ago [Sunday] in Cleveland, the Spartans upended New York University, who was ranked 21st in the nation at the time, 70-58.

After six lead changes to start the game, junior forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) put the Spartans ahead six [16-10] on a jumper with 11:36 left in the first half. Case Western Reserve went scoreless for the next six minutes while the Violets pushed out to a 19-16 lead at 7:03 with a pair of free throws by Gena Brown. NYU held the advantage, hitting three three-pointers in the last three minutes to take a 34-29 lead into the intermission. The Violets shot 67 percent from behind the arc in the first half.

NYU dominated the first five minutes of the second half jumping out to a 13-point lead at 15:01 when a layup by Sarah McDevitt put them up 48-35. The Spartans didn’t give up as sophomore guard Kristyn Atkins (Naperville, IL) finished off a 14-4 run at 9:30 with two free throws that brought Case Western Reserve within three, 52-49. After three ties and a couple lead changes, the Spartans went up 68-63 with 1:22 left in the game on a sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald) jumper and never looked back.

Jessica McEntee led the Violets with a game-high 21 points. Case Western Reserve senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) and senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Case Western Reserve, who has quadrupled its number of UAA victories from 2006-2007, travels to Boston Sunday and will face Brandeis University in another UAA contest at 2:00 p.m.
