CASE 70, #21 NYU 58...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 3, 2008) - Sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH-pictured) nearly triple-doubled in helping Case Western Reserve University upend No. 21 New York University 70-58 this afternoon at Horsbugh Gymnasium in Cleveland. Tondo finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
The Spartans (10-8, 3-4) will travel to the east coast next weekend to take on NYU on Feb. 8 in New York City and Brandeis University on Feb. 10 in Boston. The Violets (13-5, 2-5) entered the contest with a 28-1 advantage in the series between the two University Athletic Association schools. The last and only time the Spartans defeated NYU prior to today was in 2002 [66-58].
Junior forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) gave the Spartans a 12-9 lead with 12:15 remaining in the first half after splitting a pair of free-throws. Freshman guard Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA) extended the Case Western Reserve lead to six 12 second later after a baseline lay-up and free throw. The Violets would answer back, as Jessica McEntee would lead NYU on a 12-4 run. McEntee's five points during the run helped give the Violets a 21-19 advantage at 7:23. The Spartans were down 35-29 at intermission after shooting just 23.3 percent in the first half.
Tondo put Case Western Reserve up 40-38 five minutes into the second half, finishing off an 11-3 run with a lay up at 15:47. NYU briefly regained the lead 43-42 with 14:10 left in the game, but the Spartans took over. Two back-to-back three-pointers by Henry finished off a 22-5 run and put Case Western Reserve up for good 64-48 with under seven minutes remaining. The Violets shot just 27.6 percent from the field in the second half and were out rebounded 54-40 in the contest.
Henry finished with 14 points and senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) added 16 for the Spartans. Senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) moved into the second position on the women’s all-time rebounding list today. Horton’s game-high 13 rebounds gave her 768 career boards. She also had nine points. McEntee, the UAA’s leading scorer, led NYU with a game-high 25 points.
