BRANDEIS 67, CASE 65 [OT]...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 1, 2008) - Senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH– pictured) notched her eighth double-double of the season, as the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball fell 67-65 to the visiting Judges from Brandeis University in overtime. The team will be in action again on Sunday when they take on the No. 21 ranked Violets from New York University. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) got the Spartans (9-8, 2-4 UAA) going early, as her seven points in the first 10 minutes gave Case Western Reserve a 17-14 lead. Horton extended the lead to 22-14 after scoring five points on back-to-back possessions, including her fourth three-pointer of the season. The Spartans nailed five shots from long-distance in the first half, en route to a 32-24 advantage. Horton led all scorers with 10 points at intermission on 4-of-9 shooting from the field.
The Judges (13-4, 4-2 UAA) would answer back early in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 32-apiece. However, the Spartans would go on an 8-0 run themselves, taking a 40-32 advantage behind two three-point bombs from sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH). Brandeis would tie the game with 8:57 remaining, as Lauren Orlando’s lay-up knotted the game at 46-apiece.
Orlando would tie the game at 58 with less than a minute remaining, as her lay-up with 24 seconds remaining would send the game to overtime -- Case's first overtime game since the 2004-05 season.
The two teams went basket-for-basket in overtime, as Jaime Capra would again bring Brandeis back in the game with a three-pointer with 55 remaining to tie the game at 65-apiece. Amanda Wells’ basket with five seconds remaining would prove to be the dagger, giving Brandeis their ninth win in-a-row over Case Western Reserve.
The Spartans shot 41.3 percent in the game, while limiting the Judges to only 34.3 shooting from the field.
Horton finished with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in the loss. Capra finished with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while Orlando finished with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
