#12 ROCHESTER 75, CASE 70...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 27, 2008) - Senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH – pictured) scored a career and game-high 27 points, including seven three-pointers, as the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball lost a 75-70 heart-breaker to the No. 12 ranked Yellowjackets from the University of Rochester. The loss snaps a four game home-winning streak for the Spartans (9-7, 2-3 UAA).
The Spartans came out firing from beyond the arc, as a Herendeen step-back three-pointer with 10:00 remaining put the Spartans within a basket. A pair of Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) free-throws would tie the game at 24-apiece. The Spartans would take a 37-34 lead at intermission after a jumper by freshman Beth Andrasik and two free-throws by sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo.
The Spartans made 5-of-12 shots from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes, as they shot 43.8 percent from the field.
The Spartans would go up eight early in the second half after an Andrasik jumper gave the team a 42-34 lead. Rochester would pull within one point with 10:10 remaining after Helen Baroody drilled her second three-pointer of the game, limiting the Spartans’ lead to 51-50. A Johanna McNeils lay-up would put Rochester ahead, 63-60, with 6:10 remaining.
The Spartans would battle back in the final two minutes of the game, as Martin’s lay-up with 1:54 remaining would bring her team within three points, followed by an Tondo three-pointer with three seconds remaining to pull Case Western Reserve within two.
But the Yellowjackets would take the game down the stretch, as Melissa Alwardt’s jumper with 1:05 remaining in the game would all but seal the victory for Rochester, who remains unbeaten in conference play this season. Alwardt scored a team-high 16 points for Rochester.
