WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2007-08

CLEVELAND, OH (January 25, 2008) -
The Shaw High School marching band kicked the night off with their infectious grooves and sweet dance-moves, and from there, the Spartans never looked back.

The Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team (9-6, 2-2 UAA) cruised to a 76-57 victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University (7-8, 0-4 UAA), the Spartans’ ninth win in their last 10 meetings with the Tartans.

The Spartans had five players score in double-figures, with senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH– pictured) leading the way with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The Spartans went up 10 with 12:38 remaining in the first half when freshman Austin Howell (Atlanta, GA) drilled her first three-pointer of the season. Her second three-point bomb came with 10:19 remaining, giving the Spartans a commanding 28-11 lead.

Howell scored 8 points in the first 20 minutes, while sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) pitched in eight points and 5 assists, putting Case Western Reserve up, 44-25. The Spartans shot 51.5 percent in the first half, while holding the Tartans to only 30 percent from the field.

The Spartans continued their solid play in the second half, as Caitlin Henry’s (Fairfax, VA) three-pointer with 4:59 remaining gave the Spartans a 70-49 advantage – their biggest lead of the game.

The Spartans high-pressure defense led to 24 points off 22 Carnegie Mellon turnovers. The Tartans’ Jeanette Schilling scored a game-high 15 points.

The team will continue conference play on Sunday when they take on the Yellow Jackets from the University of Rochester. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
