CLEVELAND, OH (January 18, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University had a three-game winning streak snapped tonight at the Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago, Illinois. The Spartans (8-5, 1-1 UAA) fell, 67-59, to the University of Chicago (10-3, 1-1 UAA) in a University Athletic Association game.
Senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH-pictured) led four Case Western Reserve players in double figures with 15 points. Horton also had a team-high nine rebounds. The Spartans travel to St. Louis Sunday and will face Washington University at 2:00 p.m. (CST) in another UAA contest.
Freshman guard Beth Andrasik (Sagamore Hills, OH) gave the Spartans a five-point lead, 17-12, with 9:05 left in the first half. Chicago then forced three consecutive turnovers to take a five-point lead of its own, 22-17, on a made three-pointer by junior guard Alex Leach at 4:47. Case Western Reserve shot just 28.6 percent [30.6 percent for the game] from the field in the first half and trailed 28-24 at the break.
The Spartans used the three-pointer to regain the lead early in the second half. After junior forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) connected at 17:14, senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) hit one at 16:36 that put the Spartans up 34-33. The lead would then change eight times before a 47 all tie with 10:04 left. From there, Chicago went on 15-4 run and took an eleven-point lead, 62-51, with 3:43 left.
Sophomore forward Molly Hackney led the Maroons with a game-high 17 points. Herendeen had 12 points and Martin added 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Case Western Reserve.
