CASE 76, EMORY 72...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 12, 2008) - Sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH–pictured) scored a game-high 28 points, leading the Case Western Reserve University women’s basketball team to a 76-72 win over the Eagles from Emory University in both school’s University Athletic Association opener.
The Spartans (8-4, 1-0 UAA), who have won seven of their last eight contests, will travel to the Windy City on Jan. 18 to face the University of Chicago in their second UAA game of the year.
Down by as many as 10 points in the first half, Case Western Reserve would battle back, junior forward Colleen Martin’s (Rocky River, OH) lay-up with 6:30 remaining would give the Spartans a 25-24 lead. Freshman forward Austin Howell’s (Atlanta, GA) lay-up with 1.7 remaining would give Case Western Reserve a 38-35 lead at intermission.
The Spartans shot 45.5 percent in the first half, while forcing 12 Eagle turnovers and holding them to 41.1 percent shooting from the field. Senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) led all scorers with 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Herendeen finished with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Emory (7-5, 0-1 UAA) would answer back in the second half as Erica Kaplan gave her team a 43-42 advantage early in the second half. Tondo would bring the Spartans back, as her three-pointer with 7:44 remaining would give Case Western Reserve a 59-56 lead. The Spartans would take a six-point lead with 4:39 remaining after senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) scored her eighth point of the game to give her team a 66-60 advantage.
The Eagles would answer back, as Whitney Martin scored her 12 th point of the game to tie it at 70 with 1:18 remaining. But seconds later, Tondo drilled her fifth three-pointer of the game and followed it up with a free-throw with 30.3 seconds left to give the Spartans a 74-70 lead. She would seal it down the stretch, as her two free-throws with 13 seconds left gave the Case Western Reserve the victory in their first UAA game of the season.
The Spartans shot 50 percent from the field in the game, while holding the Eagles to 42.2 percent shooting from the field.
