CASE 85, KALAMAZOO 65...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 3, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH-pictured) scored a career- and game-high 35 points this afternoon to lead the Spartans over Kalamazoo College, 85-65, at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center. Tondo, who had 21 points in the second half, has scored in double figures eight times this season.
Case Western Reserve (7-4) has won six of their last seven and will begin University Athletic Association play January 12 in Atlanta, Ga. when it faces Emory University.
The Spartans, who returned from a five-day trip to California last night, were sluggish and fell behind, 17-7, just over six minutes into the game. From there, Case Western Reserve used a 21-8 run, including four three-pointers, to take its first lead of the game. Mary Herendeen connected from long distance with 4:54 left in the half to put the Spartans up 28-25 and they took a 37-32 advantage into the intermission. Herendeen finished with 16 points.
The Hornets (3-8) tied the game at 53 all with 10 minutes remaining on a jump shot by Therese Demres, but the Spartans, who shot 54.5 percent from the field in the second half, outscored Kalamazoo 32-12 down the stretch to win their last non-conference game of the season. The Hornets outrebounded Case Western Reserve 42-38, but turn the ball over 24 times.
Freshman guard Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA) added a career-high 14 points for the Spartans and Kelsea Howell led Kalamazoo with 15 points.
