CASE 74, WIDENER 67 OT...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 31, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH-pictured) and senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) each recorded a double-double as the Spartans defeated Widener University, 74-67, in overtime today at the Surf City Classic in Irvine, California. Martin had a game-high 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds while Horton had a game- and career-high 21 rebounds and scored 15 points.
Martin gave Case Western Reserve (6-4) its biggest lead of the game, 29-14, with a three-pointer with 2:38 left in the first half. Widener (6-5) shot just 23 percent from the field in the half and scored just 16 points as the Spartans led 29-16 at the break. Case Western Reserve turned the ball over 15 times (28 total) and the Pride 16 (29 total) in the first 20 minutes.
The Spartans held their lead until Barbara Fleming gave Widener its first lead since the 18:31 mark in the first half with a three-pointer with five minutes left in the game. Fleming’s shot from long distance finished off an 18-4 run that put the Pride up 46-44. Widener held its lead until a Martin layup with three seconds on the clock tied the game at 53 all and forced the overtime.
The Spartans never trailed in the five-minute overtime and led by as many as 12. Senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) scored 12 of her 19 total points in extended play.
Meghan Sipple led three Pride players in double figures with a team-high 15 points.
Case Western Reserve will host Kalamazoo College January 3 at 3:00 p.m.
