MOUNT UNION 64, CASE 59...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 16, 2007) - Case Western Reserve senior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH-pictured) scored a game-high 23 points, but the Spartans fell, 64-59, in their season opener to Mount Union College at the first annual University Athletic Association/Ohio Athletic Conference Challenge at Carnegie Mellon University. The Spartans (0-1) face Otterbein College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
Mount Union (1-0) led by only three, 17-14, at the 11:12 mark in the first half, but Tessa Pohovey finished off a 13-0 run at 5:42 with a four-point play to give the Purple Raiders a 16-point advantage, 30-14. Case Western Reserve had nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes and shot just 35.5 percent from the field. They trailed 36-24 at the intermission.
Herendeen helped the Spartans battle back in the second half, making four-of-six three-pointers. A Herendeen three-pointer at 8:43 brought Case Western Reserve within four, 49-45. The Spartans made it a three-point game, 62-59, with five seconds left on a junior forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) jumper, but Mount Union hung on.
Case Western Reserve senior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds and sophomore guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) had a game-high seven assists and added eight points. The Purple Raiders were led by Haley Drayer’s 13 points.
