T-#16 BRANDEIS 74, CASE 61...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 18, 2007) - Case Western Reserve held an early lead, but could not keep up with 16th-ranked Brandeis University, as the Spartans suffered a 74-61 loss in a University Athletic Association home game.
Case (9-15, 1-13) began the first half with a 7-0 run, ending on junior forward Ashley Horton’s (Akron, OH) layup at the 17:43 mark. Following Brandeis taking the lead, senior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) took it back for the Spartans with a jumper at 13:11 (13-12). Brandeis’ freshman guard Lauren Rashford finished a Judges’ 16-3 run with a layup at 8:27, giving them a 28-16 lead. Sophomore forward Colleen Martin’s (Rocky River, OH) layup with seven seconds left put Case’s deficit at 34-28, but Judges junior guard Kiersten Holgash’s buzzer-beating jumper made it 36-28 at the intermission.
Brandeis (19-4, 9-4) was in control the entire second half. Maria Jackson did cut the Judges’ lead to seven (41-34) with a jumper at the 15:56 mark. Case got the deficit down to single digits one more time (54-45) when freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH-pictured) sank a three-pointer at 7:56. Brandeis was 8-for-14 (57.1%) from beyond the arc in the game.
Dempsey and Tondo led all Spartans with 17 points apiece. Sophomore forward Lauren Orlando led the Judges with 12 points.
Case travels to Atlanta to play Emory on Saturday.
