#4 NEW YORK 68, CASE 65...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 16, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior guard LaVonne Sherald (Pickerington, OH - pictured) scored a season-high 16 points in the Spartans' 68-65 loss to fourth-ranked New York University tonight in a University Athletic Association home game.
Junior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) gave Case (9-14, 1-11 UAA) its final lead of the first half on a made jump shot at the 15:15 mark (9-8). Sherald's back-to-back three-pointers ended an 11-1 Violets run, which cut New York's lead to 19-16 at 7:55. NYU (21-2, 10-2) sophomore forward Jessica McEntee's made free throw with 4:07 remaining built the Violets' lead to seven (23-16). With 2:31 left, Sherald's third three-pointer of the game made it 25-22 in New York's favor. NYU led at intermission 27-22 and both teams combined for 20 first half turnovers.
The Spartans used the first 48 seconds of the second half to tie the game at 27, when freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) converted a three-point play. Junior guard Mary Herendeen's (Austinburg, OH) made three-pointer at the 11:52 mark gave Case its largest lead of the second half (43-40). With 6:36 to play, a layup by New York sophomore guard Gena Brown gave the Violets the lead for good (50-49). The Spartans hung around, though, and never let NYU go up by more than five. Case was down three with two seconds left, but Tondo's half-court heave at the final horn to tie the game hit only the backboard.
Along with Sherald, Tondo, sophomore forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH), and senior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) scored in double-figures for the Spartans with 12, 11, and 11, respectively. McEntee posted a double-double for the Violets (15 points, 14 rebounds).
Case hosts Brandeis on Sunday at 2 p.m.
