#17 WASHINGTON (MO) 67, CASE 56...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 11, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University suffered a road loss, 67-56, at Washington University in St. Louis this afternoon. The loss was the third in a row for the Spartans, whose record fell to 9-13 overall, 1-10 in the University Athletic Association.
The score remained close during the first half as both teams struggled to make shots from the field. There were five ties and eight lead changes in the half. The largest lead for the Spartans was two, when they led 24-22 with 3:25 remaining after a three-pointer by Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH). Washington (17-5, 9-3 UAA) then went on a 5-0 run to lead by three, but Case’s Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score at 27 going into halftime. Case shot 36.4 percent during the first half, while Washington shot just 27.6 percent.
The Bears, who are currently ranked 17th in the country, used a 10-0 run early in the second half to pull away from Case. The Spartans tried to claw back into the game, cutting Washington’s lead to three, 55-52, after another three-pointer by Tondo. But one minute later, a put-back basket by the Bears’ Rebecca Parker and a Case turnover on the ensuing possession quelled the Spartans’ momentum.
Ashley Horton (Akron, OH-pictured) led Case with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Case shot only 32.8 percent from the field for the game, 29.4 percent in the second half.
The Spartans will return home to Horsburgh Gymnasium this weekend when they host New York University on Friday at 6 p.m.
