CASE 76, CARNEGIE MELLON 59...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 2, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University snapped a seven-game losing streak tonight with a 76-59 University Athletic Association victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon University in Adelbert Gymnasium. The Spartans played in the old armory and wore gold Mather College uniforms as part of Throwback Weekend.
Senior guard Maria Jackson (Middlefield, OH-pictured) led three Case players in double figures with a career-high 26 points. Junior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) added a double-double (14 points and 14 rebounds).
Junior guard Leah Feola began the game with a layup at 19:21 to give Carnegie Mellon (8-11, 2-6 UAA) its only lead of the first half, 2-0. Junior guard LaVonne Sherald (Pickerington, OH) then finished off a 10-0 run with a jumper at 13:42 to put Case (9-10, 1-7) up 10-2. The Spartans went up by 15, 28-13, on a three-pointer from Jackson with 3:44 left, but the Tartans battled back to only trail by eight, 33-25, at the half.
A three-pointer from Tartans sophomore guard Colleen Light cut the Spartan lead to one, 39-38, with 15:11 left to go in the second half. Case survived the scare and never let Carnegie Mellon gain the lead in the second half. With 4:13 remaining, junior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) connected on a shot from beyond the arc to complete a 27-11 Case run, bumping the score to 66-49 in the Spartans’ favor. Sherald gave Case its biggest lead of the game, 74-56, with a made free throw at the 1:26 mark.
Freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) added 12 points and six assists. Feola led the Tartans with 20.
The Spartans will host seventh-ranked University of Rochester on Sunday in Adelbert Gym at 2:00 p.m.
