#10 ROCHESTER 62, CASE 41...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 26, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH-pictured) had a career-high 16 points as the Spartans fell to 10th-ranked University of Rochester, 62-41, in New York. Herendeen was 4-of-7 from behind the arc in the University Athletic Association contest.
The game was tied 6-6 at the 15:37 mark, but sophomore guard Helen Baroody hit consecutive buckets to put Rochester (15-2, 4-2) up 15-6. Baroody hit a jumper at 13:08 and a three-pointer a minute later to end a 9-0 run. The Yellowjackets held Case (8-9, 0-6) scoreless for seven and a half minutes, before Herendeen made a three-pointer at 7:58 to make it 25-9. Herendeen led the Spartans, who shot just 26 percent, with 11 first half points. Case trailed 40-19 at the break.
Rochester, who shot just 37 percent in the second half, managed to pull further away. Senior forward Emily Lyons hit a pair of free throws to put the Yellowjackets up by 30, 58-28, at 10:01. Lyons finished with 12 points. Freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) had six second half points, but the Spartans never got closer than 20 points. Rochester, who was led by sophomore forward Alex Porter’s 17 points and seven rebounds, out-rebounded Case 48-24 in the game.
The Spartans will travel to Pittsburgh Sunday to face Carnegie Mellon University at 2:00 p.m.
