#14 NYU 88, CASE 74...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 21, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH-pictured) recorded a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) as the Spartans lost to 14th-ranked New York University 88-74 today in a University Athletic Association road game.
NYU (15-1, 4-1 UAA) jumped out to an early five-point lead, 9-4, when sophomore forward Jessica McEntee completed a three-point play with a foul shot at the 17:05 mark. The Violets used an 11-3 run to push ahead 11, 28-17, with a layup by senior guard Adrienne Rochetti at 7:48. Senior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) brought Case (8-8, 0-5 UAA) back within six, 30-24, with a three-pointer at 5:28, but NYU led 44-28 at the break. The Spartans were called for 17 fouls in the first half and the Violets five.
NYU’s biggest lead of the game came at the 11:33 mark in the second half. Sophomore guard Sarah McDevitt hit a three-pointer that put the Violets up by 22, 68-46. Case brought it back within 13 points a couple times in the remaining minutes, but dropped its fifth straight. McEntee led NYU, who turned the ball over 21 times, with a game-high 22 points. The Spartans recovered from their 20.8 percent shooting from the field in the first half as they shot 51.5 percent in the last 20 minutes.
Dempsey had a team-high 18 points and senior guard Maria Jackson (Middlefield, OH) added 10 points, four assists and nine rebounds for Case.
The Spartans will travel to the University of Rochester on Friday (6:00 p.m.) and will be at Carnegie Mellon Sunday (2:00 p.m.).
