CLEVELAND, OH (January 14, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University lost to the University of Chicago, who is currently ranked seventh in the country, 71-62 this afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center. Freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH-pictured) led three Spartans in double figures with 16 points. Case will travel to Boston Friday to face Brandeis University (10th in the country) at 6:00 p.m.
Case (8-6, 0-3 UAA) senior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) gave Case an early seven-point advantage, 9-2, with a made three-pointer at the 17:33 mark in the first half. Chicago (14-0, 3-0 UAA) reversed that lead at 6:37 when sophomore guard Alex Leach finished off a 23-9 run with a three-pointer to put the Maroons up 25-18. Case battled back and junior forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) hit a jumper to end the half and bring the Spartans within one, 31-30 at the break.
Chicago pushed its lead to nine, 61-52, when junior guard Nofi Mojidi made a layup at the 5:07 mark in the second half. Mojidi finished with a game-high 20 points. Case senior guard Maria Jackson (Middlefield, OH) had a chance to bring Case within three at 1:13 when she was fouled, but Jackson missed both foul shots as the Spartans connected on just 12-22 from the free throw line in the game. Chicago edged Case in rebounds 42-38 and forced 22 turnovers.
Sophomore forward Colleen Martin posted 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Spartans.
