EMORY 75, CASE 72...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 6, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH-pictured) led three Spartans in double figures with 15 points, but Case lost to visiting Emory University 75-72 in its University Athletic Association opener.
Junior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) gave Case (8-4, 0-1) their only lead (3-0) of the first half with a three-pointer at the 19:22 mark. Sophomore forward Lora Turner gave Emory (7-5, 1-0) a nine-point lead, 27-18, with a layup at 7:19. Junior guard LaVonne Sherald (Pickerington, OH) cut Case’s deficit to six, 39-33, with a layup to end the half. The Spartans turned the ball over 11 times (16 for the game).
With 14:29 left in the second half, Case tied the game at 43-43 on another Sherald layup. Then Turner gave the Eagles a 51-49 lead with a jumper at the 11:03 mark and they never trailed again. Turner finished with a game-high 21 points. Following Eagles' senior point guard Beth Bergmann’s two free throws with five seconds remaining, Spartans’ senior guard Maria Jackson (Middlefield, OH) heaved a 23-foot desperation three-point attempt that hit the backboard.
Sherald finished the game with four points and seven assists and sophomore forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) just missed a double-double (eight points, nine rebounds) for Case.
The Spartans will host Washington University (MO) on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
