CASE 67, JOHNS HOPKINS 53...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 26, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University handed Johns Hopkins University its first loss of the season, 67-53, today at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio. Case freshman guard Ashleigh Tondo (McDonald, OH) went 5-of-8 from the field for a game-high 12 points and sophomore forward Colleen Martin-pictured (Rocky River, OH) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
The score was tied five times in the first half as each team shot below 40 percent from the field (35.7% for Case, 36.4% for Hopkins). From a 23-23 deadlock at the 5:08 mark, the Spartans (3-1) went on a 9-0 run and jumped ahead by nine, 32-23, with 1:03 left in the half on a junior guard LaVonne Sherald (Pickerington, OH) jump shot. Case took a 34-25 advantage into the intermission as Tondo and junior guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) had six points apiece. The Blue Jays (2-1) turned the ball over 18 times in the first 20 minutes.
The Spartans pushed their lead to 13 points, 52-39, at the 8:17 mark in the second half on a senior guard Maria Jackson (Middlefield, OH) jump shot. Jackson finished with six points and eight rebounds. Case never trailed in the last 20 minutes as Hopkins went just 9-of-26 from the field in the half and finished the game shooting 35.4 percent. The Spartans forced 11 more Blue Jay turnovers in the last 20 minutes (29 in the game) and both teams grabbed 41 rebounds. The Spartans will travel to the College of Wooster November 29 for a 7:30 p.m. game.
