CASE 65, EMORY 46...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 25, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University junior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field as the Spartans defeated Emory University 65-46 in both teams’ season finales at the Veale Center. The Spartans finished the season 13-12 overall and 6-8 in the University Athletic Association while Emory finished 15-10 and 5-9.
Emory only hit 4-of-31 shots (12.9%) from the field in the first half as they trailed the Spartans, who shot only 38.7 percent (12-of-31), 28-13 at the break. Dempsey scored nine of her 12 first half points in the first nine minutes as Case led 19-4 at the 8:49 mark. She finished the game 3-of-5 from behind the arc. The two teams were even on the boards, with the Spartans edging the Eagles 26-25.
Both teams improved their shooting in the second half and Case increased their lead to 25 (47-22) with 12:55 left via senior guard Amber Hammell’s - pictured (Parkersburg, WV) three-pointer. Hammell finished the game with 13 points, moving her into the tenth position on the Spartan women’s all-time points list with 910. Both teams turned the ball over 20 plus times (Case 22, Emory 20).
Senior forward Andrew Haylett (Mantua, OH) rounded out Case’s scoring attack with 14 points and senior forward Carmen Rowan (Richmond Hts., OH) grabbed a game high eight rebounds. The Eagles were led by Katie Bergfeld (High Ridge, MO) and Kate Garrity (Duxbury, MA) with eight points apiece.
