CASE 72, CARNEGIE MELLON 61...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 19, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University junior guard Dana Dempsey - pictured (Brooklyn, OH) went 8-of-13 from the field, including 6-of-9 from behind the arc, for a career high 23 points today as the Spartans defeated Carnegie Mellon University 72-61 in a University Athletic Association at the Veale Center .
Case improves to .500 on the season overall (12-12) and 5-8 in the UAA. Carnegie Mellon drops to 5-19 and 0-13. The Spartans host Emory University this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in their last game of the season.
Case led by only one (20-19) with 8:17 remaining in the first half, but ended the half with a 20-4 run to take a 17 point lead (40-23) into the break. The Spartans went 15-of-31 from the field (48.4%) and forced 10 Carnegie Mellon turnovers. They were led by Dempsey’s 12 points and senior forward Andrea Haylett’s (Mantua, OH) 11. The Tartans, who shot just 31.3 percent (10-32) in the half, out-rebounded Case 20-19.
Carnegie Mellon cut the Spartans lead down to nine (53-44) with 7:54 left in the game when freshman guard Corey Innes (Commerce, MI) finished off a 12-4 run with a jumper. That’s as close as they would get as Case, who shot just 37 percent from the field (10-27) in the second half, hung on to win their third straight. The Tartans out-rebounded the Spartans 44-40 in the contest.
Senior guard Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) and Haylett had 13 points a piece for Case and Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) led the team in rebounding with 10. Carnegie Mellon was led by sophomore guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, PA), who had a career and game-high 24 points.
