CASE 66, #24 ROCHESTER 55...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 17, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University senior forward Andrea Haylett-pictured (Mantua, OH) scored a season high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds tonight as the Spartans upset #24 ranked University of Rochester 66-55 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game at the Veale Center. The victory is the second in a row for Case, who improves to 11-12 overall and 4-8 in the UAA. Rochester falls to 16-7 and 7-5 with the loss. The Spartans host Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at 3:00 p.m .
Case opened up the game with a 10-0 run over the first five minutes of action. Rochester did not score until the 14:49 mark in the first half and struggled from the field, connecting on just 3-of-23 (13%) in the half. Nine of the Yellowjackets 16 points in the first 20 minutes came from the free throw line where they were 9-of-14. Junior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) connected on 3-of-5 shots from behind the arc to lead Case with nine first half points. The Spartans shot only 38.5 percent (10-26), but out-rebounded Rochester 24-16 in the half and led at the break 26-16. Senior forward Carmen Rowan (Richmond Hts., OH) led Case with six first half boards.
In the second half, Case built their advantage to as many as 13 points early in the period. Rochester managed to whittle the lead down to six points, 53-47, on an Alex Porter (Rockville, MD) lay-up with 2:39 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) hit a three-pointer to push Case’s advantage back out to nine points. Hammell, who started with early foul trouble, finished the contest with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Case hit 8-of-12 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Dempsey led all scorers with 19 points in the game while Rowan led Case with 10 rebounds. Jessie Graham (Seattle, WA) finished with a team-high 10 points for Rochester while Porter recorded 10 rebounds for the Yellowjackets.
