CLEVELAND, OH (February 5, 2006) - Case Western Reserve senior Andrea Haylett - pictured (Mantua, OH) matched a season-high with 10 points as Brandeis University defeated the Spartans 58-52 in the final game of Case's Throwback Weekend. For the second straight game, Case wore yellow uniforms in honor of the former Mather College and played in the old Adelbert Gymnasium. With their fifth consecutive loss, Case drops to 9-11 on the season and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Brandeis, the #10 ranked team in Division III, improves to 15-3 overall and 6-3 in the UAA .
Amanda DeMartino (Toms River, NJ) led all first half scorers with nine points as Brandeis built a 31-21 advantage at halftime. The Judges made 5-of-11 three point attempts in the first 20 minutes while Case missed five shots from behind the arc. The Spartans also struggled from the free throw line as they made only 5-of-11 free throws. Case's Carmen Rowan ( Richmond Heights , OH ) scored eight points as she connected on all three of her field goal attempts in the first half.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Case's two leading scorers senior Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) and junior Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) combined for 19 points in the final half. In the second half, Case's field goal percentage improved to 37.1% as they connected on 13-of-35 shots. Brandeis cooled off in the second half connecting on just seven of their 25 field goal attempts, including just two of ten from behind the arc.
For the game, Case had a 42-40 rebounding advantage led by Ashley Horton's 13 rebounds. Horton (Akron, OH) added eight points as did front court mate Carmen Rowan (Richmond Heights, OH). Each team was guilty of 18 turnovers for the game as both teams shot below 35% for the game.
The Spartans battled back to within five points when Dana Dempsey connected on a three point shot from the corner with 5:06 remaining in the game. Down the stretch, the Judges were able to hit 11 of their 16 free throw attempts in the second half to secure the victory.
Christine Clancy (Yarmouth, ME) scored a game-high 14 points for the Judges while Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, NJ) had 13 points and Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, CT) added 10 points to round out the Brandeis scorers in double figures.
Case travels to St. Louis to battle UAA foe Washington University on Friday and then heads to battle the University of Chicago on Sunday. Box Score
