WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2005-06

Case led 54-50 with 10:34 to play in the second period as Hammell nailed a long-range three-pointer. The Violets then scored the next seven points, including four from Iseult Conlin (Belmont, MA), to go back in front 57-54. The NYU lead didn’t last long as Carmen Rowan (Richmond Heights, OH) completed a conventional three-point play to tie the score at 57-57 with 8:03 to play in the game. That was as close as Case would get however with NYU outscoring the Spartans 17-6 down the stretch.

NYU and Case played a back-and-forth first half that saw the lead change eight times. The Violets used a 12-4 scoring run to take an eight-point lead, 30-22, late in the first period. Case then closed out the half with a 9-2 run over the final 4:31 to trail by just one point, 32-31, at halftime. The Spartans forced 15 NYU turnovers in the half which they converted for 15 points at the other end of the court. Case meanwhile turned the ball over just three times in the first 20 minutes. Hammell led all scorers with 11 points in the first half, while Adrienne Rochetti (Vineland, NJ) and Chiene Jones (Briarwood, NY) each had six for the Violets.

Just as in New York City five days earlier, the Violets out-shot the Spartans, this time NYU hit 46.2% of their shots compared to 29.5% for Case. Case’s LaVonne Sherald (Pickerington, OH) scored nine points on 4-of-8 shooting while Rowan pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. Jessica McEntee (Flushing, NY) and Rochetti led the Violets in scoring with 12 points apiece. Stephanie Ryba (New Britain, CT) added 10 points in the victory for NYU with Karen Bachman (Avon, CT) contributing 11 rebounds.

Throwback Weekend continues Sunday as the Spartans will again wear the Mather College gold when they take on Brandeis College at 2:00 p.m. in Adelbert Gymnasium.
