#11 BRANDEIS 76, CASE 66 ...
WALTHAM, MA (January 27, 2006) - Case Western Reserve senior Amber Hammell – pictured (Parkersburg, WV) led all scorers with 23 points, but it wasn't enough as Brandeis University defeated Case 76-66 this evening. Brandeis, currently the #11 ranked team in Division III improved to 13-2 and 4-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while Case drops to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the UAA .
Brandeis built a 43-25 lead at halftime behind 11 points from Christine Clancy (Yarmouth, ME). The Judges shot a scorching 56.7% (17-30) from the field in the first 20 minutes while Case was just 9-for-27 (33.3%) in their field goal attempts. Hammell led the Spartans with 10 points in the first period. The Judges also out-rebounded Case with 24 rebounds compared to only 10 for the Spartans.
In the second half, junior Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) scored 11 points to spark a Spartan comeback. Case improved on their shooting and went 15-27 (55.6%) from the field in the second period while the Judges cooled off to shoot 36.0% (9-25). Case closed within six points at the 3:38 mark and continued to trail by only six with 2:20 remaining. However, clutch free throw shooting from the Judges down the stretch, secured the win for Brandeis. The Judges ended the contest with 33 rebounds while Case had 32 in the game.
Dempsey finished with 15 points for the Spartans with Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) adding eight points and seven rebounds for Case. Brandeis junior Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, CT) led the way for the Judges with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Clancy also finished with 17 points for Brandeis.
